Brett Smith of Maui Built Homes was the lead carpenter on the major renovation we did on our home three years ago. This job involved all of the rooms in the house and required skills ranging from framing to finish carpentry. We were very pleased with Brett’s work.
It was very easy to work with Brett as he was available every day to consult on the work ahead. His attention to detail, and to us, made the tasks proceed smoothly. Doing a major renovation of a house requires lots of decision making, on the part of the owner; becoming like a second job. Having Brett on our side made the process much easier. His professionalism resulted in the end product something we are all proud of.
When our friends visit they often remark on the touches that were in fact Brett’s work. All over the house are examples of where Brett made a suggestion or built something special. The railing around the stairwell is an example of his craftsmanship about which our visitors remark.
We appreciate Brett’s work and are happy to recommend him. One fact is that three years after he completed the job, we are still in contact with him and happy to see him when he stops by.

We recently used Brett and his Maui Built Homes team to build two high-end utility buildings on our Haiku property.
Brett was wonderful to work with. He started work promptly, worked a full day and was careful to clean up the work site at the end of the day. It may have been the tidiest construction site I’ve seen.
The architectural plans for our structures were not very detailed, which necessitated numerous decisions to be made during construction. Brett worked with us on all of those decisions and helped immensely with materials orders and overseeing shipping of numerous custom elements – some of which were sourced from the mainland. The construction quality was superb. He has an eye for detail and, consequently, all of the small details that often go unnoticed were finished perfectly.
Brett was very communicative and cost conscious and worked with us on keeping project costs under control. I felt very well informed at every step. He even sent numerous photos while I was traveling on the mainland.
Finally, billing was fair, accurate and timely.
The project was completed in a timely manner and, unlike other construction projects I’ve been involved in, this was actually a very pleasant experience. In fact, we were sorry to see him go.

They showed up when they said they would and competently worked through whatever problems came up. Brett is an excellent carpenter and pays close attention to detail. This is to certify that Brett Smith of Maui Built Homes acted as project manager and lead carpenter on three phases of a renovation at 564 Holopuni Road, Kula, Maui, in 2007. The project commenced with a complete, floor to ceiling renovation of the entire house. The kitchen was replaced in its entirety; the floors had travertine marble installed throughout the house. The bathrooms were re-fixtured and re-tiled. There was a new bedroom and bathroom addition added and many other upgrades.
The second phase of the renovation was the building of a negative edge pool which required footings 6ft wide and 2 ft thick and a pool shell 12 ft high at its highest point. The shell had to be filled to a depth of 6 ft and the level of the land around the pool raised by six ft to accommodate the trough for the negative edge.
The third phase of the addition required building two walls 32 ft apart and building a 25 ft wide suspended deck between them which was later clad with quartzite stone to create a pool side deck. After that was done the house was totally repainted.
Brett coordinated all this work, expedited materials and labor, looked after payroll and was still able to perform his duties as carpenter. For much of this renovation I was on the mainland with Brett acting as project manager. At every stage of the project we were in touch daily by phone and email. He was able to supply me with weekly progress photos and bring me up to date with the performance of all the other trades.
From this experience, I can honestly recommend Brett to perform with extraordinary diligence and proficiency at any project he undertakes. Without his help and constant supervision we would not have achieved the outstanding results we have at a final price that was below market rates.
